With due respect this is to convey that Vivekananda Sevakendra-O-Sishu Uddyan is going to celebrate the Inaugural Ceremony of The Oceanic Library on June 7, 2008, at 0930 hrs. at Ashok Nilay complex, Ullon, South 24 Parganas, a joint venture of READ Global and VSSU. To inaugurate this library Senator Omer L. Rains, Board Member, READ Global, Dr. Antonia Neubauer, Founder & Chairperson, READ Global, Mr. Robert Reno, Asia Managing Director, READ Global, Ms. Jessica Rains, Mr. C.M. Jantua, IPS, Ex-DIG & Ex-MLA and several other dignitaries are coming to make the effort successful. The Oceanic Library will address a tremendous need of the people of locality. Students will be able to access books and the Internet to expand their knowledge and help with school work, and women and mothers will learn about improved health care, early childhood development and expanding economic opportunities. Everyone will have the opportunities to gather here and learn from each other and free accession to Audio-visual section The Oceanic Library plans to offer a variety of economic, social and educational programmes for all ages, genders and literacy levels. We will strive to make The Oceanic Library a vibrant community centre, dedicated to improving the quality of life for the people of the area. We greatly appreciate the support of READ and Senator Omer L. Rains.
Hence to celebrate this inaugural ceremony VSSU will conduct a whole day cultural programme and competition on few events.

VSSU即將在本年度六月七日早上九點半,舉辦Oceanic Library的開幕典禮。未來,學生可以在這裡借書、使用網際網路來增進知識,婦女可以學習如何改善衛生環境、幼兒教育以及改善經濟。這個圖書館將免費提供各種經濟社會與教育課程給各種年齡、性別與教育水準的民眾。Oceanic Library將成為一個致力改善居民生活水準的鄉鎮中心。

(我會找一天好好寫這位Kapila 但先讓我說說圖書館這事)
信中提到的READ是一個國際性的NGO,專門在第三世界國家蓋圖書館。去年夏天,也約莫是這個時候,他們找上VSSU,就是我工作的NGO。
第一次碰面是在晚餐的餐桌上。還記得當時我跟他們的人為了瘧疾究竟有沒有可能治癒,還有台灣是不是跟印度一樣落後爭論不休,沒想到那個怪怪的婆婆就是READ創辦人,旁邊那個試圖打圓場的阿伯是參議員。
隔天跟著他們一起參加座談會、跑了一趟Sundurban。一開始,他們很質疑圖書館的錢跟地要從哪裡來,以及事後的管理等等。做事從不拖泥帶水的Kapila一聽,一口就答應了50%的興建經費,還興沖沖帶著我們去看他買的地。READ這群人完全被這種辦事效率嚇到。
也許印度現在是世界上最多工程學生的國家。每個人想到印度,就是聰明、素質高、訓練精良的理工人才,但在一般印度人的眼中,這些都是天方夜譚。最明顯的例子,在公共學校裡的學生,有多少是天天來上課的?而老師呢?再者,回家以後,有多少人會溫習課業(假如有功課)或閱讀(假如有書)?
我一度覺得蓋圖書館這種事情緩不濟急,但在印度待久了,才發現到這個國家就是因為太多人太心急,不肯好好打穩根基;偏偏印度又是個幅員廣大、國情十分複雜的國家,很多事情即使做了也看不到成效。
現在我反而很欣賞這種聚沙成塔式的創意。這是在一點一滴地打基礎,因為有了一個圖書館,小孩子放學後至少有地方可以去,即使是翻兩頁書或上網亂逛,至少可以一窺外面的世界。這樣就足以改變他的人生。
漸漸地,就可以改變整個國家了。
